Italian Installment Stars Matilda De Angelis

Prime Video has released a high-octane trailer for its spy series “Citadel: Diana,” starring Italy’s Matilda De Angelis (“The Undoing”) as Diana Cavalieri, an undercover Citadel agent fighting against an enemy syndicate set in a near-future Milan.

The six-episode show – which marks the streamer’s most ambitious Italian original to date – is the country’s installment of Prime Video’s high-concept “Citadel” franchise that debuted in April 2023. The series is meant to serve as a launch pad for multiple shows set in different countries that are all connected via plot and characters.

De Angelis, a rising Italian star, made her international breakthrough in Susanne Bier’s “The Undoing,” alongside Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. She also appeared with Liev Schrieber in the Ernest Hemingway adaptation “Across the River and Into the Trees,” directed by Paula Ortiz.

“Citadel: Diana” takes place in 2030 Milan where, eight years earlier, the independent global spy agency Citadel was wiped out by Manticore, a powerful enemy syndicate that manipulates the world from the shadows. Since then, undercover Citadel agent Diana Cavalieri has been “trapped behind enemy lines as a mole in Manticore,” as the provided synopsis puts it.

The only way out is by trusting a most unexpected ally, Edo Zani, the heir of Manticore Italy and son of Ettore, the head of the Italian organization, who is vying for the evil syndicate’s leadership against other European families.

Besides De Angelis, additional cast members of the Italian “Citadel” installment include Lorenzo Cervasio, who plays Edo Zani; Maurizio Lombardi, who plays Ettore Zani; Thekla Reuten, Julia Piaton, Filippo Nigro and Bernhard Schütz. 

“Citadel Diana,” as previously announced, will launch globally on Prime Video Oct. 10.

The show is produced by Rome-based Cattleya (known for “Gomorrah”), which is part of ITV Studios, and Amazon MGM Studios. The show is executive produced by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. Gina Gardini (“Gomorrah,” “ZeroZeroZero”) is the showrunner.

“Citadel: Diana” is directed by Arnaldo Catinari and developed by Alessandro Fabbri, who is also the head writer. He wrote the series with Ilaria Bernardini, Gianluca Bernardini, Laura Colella and Giordana Mari.
