Jujutsu Kaisen: Why There Needs To Be A Heian Era Spinoff
Key Takeaways
Table of Contents
- A Heian Era spinoff for Jujutsu Kaisen could provide the closure and answers many fans wanted.
- The spinoff would showcase Sukuna’s prime, new Cursed Techniques, and provide context for Kenjaku’s plan.
- The Heian Era setting offers a chance to explore powerful factions, complex techniques, and add depth to the original series.
The ending of Jujutsu Kaisen didn’t go down very well with many fans. From complaints about the rushed finale to others stating how many of the series’ most pertinent questions were left unanswered, the final chapter of this once much-beloved series left a sour taste in the mouths of many, so much so that many forums and discussion circles call this one of the worst endings of all modern anime.
However, this may be because the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen is still fresh and, just like the ending of anything else, there are always going to be those who disagree with it. So, this is why a Heian Era spinoff for the franchise would be the perfect next step, as it would not only give the Sukuna flashback that everyone was hoping for, it could also answer some of the most important questions that the main series didn’t.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s ending left a lot to be desired for many fans, but here’s how part 2 could fix all those mistakes if it ever happens!
The Golden Age Of Jujutsu Sorcery
What To Expect From This Series
Ever since the first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen was released, the Heian Era has been teased as the time in Japan’s history when Jujutsu was in its Golden Era. This added to the mystery and strength of Sukuna before it was ever properly shown, so it always made fans wonder just how dangerous this period was, considering Sukuna had to claw his way out to come on top, and how fierce his battles were that they made him into such a monster.
By setting up the time period as being one with constant suffering and pain, it added a great amount of mystery to this era and built it up as something that fans really wanted, and expected, to see. Sukuna’s Heian Era flashback was also one of the things that fans most looked forward to but was never delivered, prompting a great deal of disappointment.
A system that isn’t based purely on strength is boring if you ask me.
Moreover, the world, in general, was far different, as the average sorcerer was far stronger than the ones during the time of Jujutsu Kaisen, mainly because life was far more difficult and survival was a daily struggle. This even led to some powerful Cursed Spirits roaming around as well as some mysterious and equally powerful factions vying for control, such as the Fujiwara Clan and the 5 Void Generals. Both of these factions remain a mystery but have been built up in a fascinating way, so fans want to know about them.
The Heian Era would also show Sukuna in his prime, with all the power he originally had. Although he was still very close to his full strength during the Shinjuku Showdown, he was still missing his last finger as well as his mysterious spear called Hiten, so to see him rule over the Heian Era with an iron fist would be incredible. Or, if a spinoff during this era were to happen, it could even be based around Sukuna’s entire ascent to power from a weak Curse User to a godlike entity with almost unparalleled strength and knowledge of Jujutsu.
One of the best parts about Jujutsu Kaisen is the focus placed on the complex and powerful Cursed Techniques. So, in a series set during the time when Jujutsu Sorcery flourished more than ever, the possibility of seeing characters with new, strong, and infinitely more complex techniques than what fans have seen before is greater than ever, allowing Gege to completely let his creative juices flow like never before.
This would also give a greater insight into the events that led to the original series, as it would show Kenjaku undergoing his millennia-long plan and how he would have interacted with and convinced Sukuna to help him with it. Although the end-point is known, it would add greater context and depth to how everything played out the way it did, perhaps even showing how Kenjaku and Sukuna put everything in place.

Providing Closure To The Series
Answering Some of the Unanswered Questions
Something that fans were disappointed with when thinking of the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen were quite a few unanswered questions that shouldn’t have been left up in the air. Obviously, in a series set 1000 years before the current setting, many questions such as the nature of Yuji’s Domain or what happened with Tengen’s Merger cannot possibly be answered in this spinoff, but many of them can be.
For example, one of the series’ biggest questions had to do with the best way to deal with Cursed Energy. While this question was never answered, making it near impossible to know the answer 1000 years ago, the spinoff can add some much-needed context to the question as well, allowing fans to extrapolate the answer for themselves, which they were mostly unable to do during the original series due to the confusing nature of Cursed Energy.
Are you letting your mind wander during a fight?
Moreover, another mystery has to do with the powerful clans and their lack of presence during the Heian Era. Like this, there are many questions that the original series posed but failed to answer, showing that there is a lot of room for world-building if a Heian Era spinoff is ever going to happen.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
