Jim Carrey Reveals Why He's In Sonic The Hedgehog 3 After Claiming He'd Retired

Audiences will soon have the chance to see Jim Carrey on the big screen again when Sonic The Hedgehog 3 releases on December 20, 2024. He will once again take on the role of Doctor Eggman, with the film also featuring plenty of well-known characters from the video game franchise, such as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will also see the debut of Shadow within this movie franchise, with the edgy character being voiced by Keanu Reeves.

The iconic actor stepping back into the world of Sonic was something that many people didn’t expect after he’d stated he was retiring in April 2022. The Dumb and Dumber star was, at the very least, taking a break from acting at that stage, but it’s not one that lasted very long as he jumped back into the acting role and even increased his workload by playing two parts in Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Not only will he reprise his role as Doctor Eggman, but Carrey will also star as Gerald Robotnik, who is Ivo Robotnik’s grandfather.

Carrey spoke to an AP reporter on the red carpet for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 about his previous retirement comments. The actor said, “That night might’ve been hyperbole, yeah. I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”

Carrey is expected to play a significant part in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, which was expected from the moment it became clear he was playing two parts. The trailer showcases Sonic actually looking for help from his arch-nemesis in Doctor Eggman, which could potentially see him take on a more heroic role this time around. However, the role of Gerald Robotnik is likely to be villainous as he’s the character who creates Shadow, who is Sonic’s nemesis in this particular story.

Carrey took on key roles in the previous two Sonic The Hedgehog movies, which were released in 2020 and 2022 respectively, and it was after the second one that he began to tease the idea of retiring. However, the character of Doctor Eggman is crucial to Sonic, considering how involved he is in the video games, and not having him return for the third movie would have created a disconnect within the trilogy that people wouldn’t have wanted.

Carrey continuing to act is something that will make many people happy, considering his importance to the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise. Not only that, but he’s also an incredibly talented actor who has been involved in countless huge projects throughout his career, which have left a mark on the world of entertainment. While he might wish to slow things down slightly to look toward the future and life after acting, his involvement in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is a positive sign that Carrey isn’t retiring just yet and that he still has a desire to work, which is a positive situation for Hollywood.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 sets up a new threat for Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails by introducing Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow presents such a big danger to planet Earth, that the heroes have to team up with Dr. Robotnik.
