The anime adaptation for Dandadan has a few key differences, including political and stylistic changes.
Seiko Ayase’s Supernatural Powers
Momo’s Grandmother Possesses Frightening Abilities That Can Challenge Any Spirit
Seiko Ayase is an esteemed spirit medium with unparalleled knowledge and understanding of spirits. Popularly known as Santa Dodoria, she has decades of experience practicing mediumship. Seiko is highly regarded by other experienced spirit mediums and is primarily sought after for exorcising dangerous spirits. Her thriving spirit medium career is mainly a testament to her supernatural powers and abilities that allow her to go toe-to-toe against some of the most frightening spirits in existence.
Like other spirit mediums, Seiko Ayase relies on power borrowing to gain supernatural abilities. Each region in Japan has its own gods. Spirit mediums, in exchange for performing certain rituals and obligations, can borrow their powers and use them as they see fit. But these supernatural abilities come with their limitations. Depending on the nature of the deity, a spirit medium can only push themselves to a certain threshold.

Dandadan: Best Characters In The Manga, Ranked
The Dandadan manga is home to a selection of great characters, but some are arguably better than others.
Furthermore, the obligations and rituals must be performed consistently to thank the gods if one wishes to retain their powers. In Seiko’s case, she is obligated to express gratitude by visiting temples for three days. In chapter 28 of the manga, Jiji arrives at the Ayase residence expecting Seiko’s help in exorcising the spirit that is haunting his home in the village. But since Ayase borrows her powers from the god of Hokkaido, its influence is limited to Kamikoshi City. Therefore, she is unable to help Jiji and is forced to entrust Momo and Okarun with the assignment.
It is noteworthy that five spirit mediums have already committed suicide while trying to exorcise the spirit at Jiji’s house, and eventually, when the rest gave up, they recommended Ayase for the task. It speaks volumes about her influence among the spirit mediums, who, as mentioned earlier, revere her. While Seiko is rendered ineffective outside Kamikoshi City, her power borrowing comes with many applications. One of the most commonly used ones is known as the mystic barrier. At the outskirts of her dwelling, Seiko erects magical barriers using charm nails and talismans that can exorcise evil spirits.
Ayase can use the mystic barriers when faced with evil spirits outside the Tori Gate as well. Using the tip of her bat, Seiko can draw a large circle around a spirit and place a charm nail inside, effectively imprisoning it on the spot. If the spirit tries to free itself from the barrier, it risks getting incinerated by the flame ignition effect.

In addition to power borrowing, Seiko Ayase can also harness the power of words, using which she can alter reality with her conviction. However, it must be noted that its effectiveness is quite limited. Unlike ordinary people, Seiko possesses spiritual awareness and can see spirits. She is also revealed to be clairvoyant and regularly features on television shows disguised as Santa Dodorio.
Seiko Ayase’s Natural Abilities
Apart From Her Supernatural Gifts, Seiko Also Possesses Incredible Natural Powers
Seiko Ayase may look like an ordinary human being, but her physical prowess far exceeds the upper limits of the average person’s capabilities. She possesses impressive reflexes and speed that make her seem like a superhuman. When she fights Evil Eye, she manages to dodge his attacks with precision. Despite being in close combat with such an intimidating spirit, she escapes largely unharmed.
Furthermore, Ayase even manages to knock Evil Eye down using her bat. The force behind her swing is so wild that she creates a huge crater. Apart from being bestowed with incredibly fast reflexes and superhuman strength, Seiko Ayase is also gifted with a tactical intellect. When she faced Turbo Granny, she predicted her attacks and created a mystical barrier in advance. Her planning was so accurate that the evil spirit found herself at a complete disadvantage. Seiko’s tactical intellect surprised Turbo Granny one more time when Ayase laid out a detailed plan for her exorcism.
In the Onbusuman arc, Ayase displayed similar tactical brilliance to help Okarun’s classmate Rin Sawaki. While Seiko is gifted with supernatural powers, she thrives as a spirit medium primarily because of her instincts and abilities. Her knowledge and understanding of the supernatural further enhance her effectiveness, making Ayase a dangerous opponent to any spirit.
